Sadia Shakeel, Muhammad Asif, Syed Amir Gilani et al. (2023). Synergistic effect of Moringa oleifera and Allium sativum on BMI and lipid profile: A randomized controlled trial. Pakistan Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
This Pakistani randomized controlled trial investigated whether combining Moringa oleifera (drumstick tree) leaves with garlic could help manage high cholesterol and body weight better than either treatment alone. Researchers divided 60 people with high cholesterol into four groups: one receiving moringa leaf capsules, another getting garlic, a third getting both moringa and garlic together, and a control group taking the cholesterol medication atorvastatin. Each participant took 2 grams daily of moringa leaf powder in capsule form for 12 weeks. The study measured changes in body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol, LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol), and triglycerides. Results indicated that the combination of moringa and garlic showed synergistic effects, meaning they worked better together than individually. The combined treatment demonstrated significant improvements in lipid profiles and BMI reduction compared to single treatments. While not as potent as atorvastatin, the natural combination showed promising results with potentially fewer side effects. This research suggests that moringa leaves combined with garlic might offer a natural approach to supporting healthy cholesterol levels and weight management, though more extensive studies would be needed to confirm these preliminary findings.
